COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Click for Video |
The Junior League of Wilmington is an area leader in developing and
implementing volunteer projects that meet the changing needs of the
community. We have an extensive history of bringing forth projects that
have a long and successful life, and can easily be transferred back to the
community. We offer continued support and guidance when needed, on
programs that we start.

Current Programs
Our current focus is on LITERACY. The following is a list of the projects the
League is currently supporting.
- Helping the East Side Charter School by purchasing an accelerated reading program for them and by organizing
their library (read
more).
- Acquiring the supplies and assembling the Baylor Mothertime Story Kits for Read Aloud Delaware. These reading/activity kits
are for children who are visiting their mother at Baylor
Correctional Facility.
- Acquiring the supplies and assembling the I Love to Read Award Packets
for Read Aloud Delaware. These award packets
are given to children to award them for reading with their parents.
- Preparing a large mailing for the Caregiver Conference conducted by Read Aloud Delaware.
- Running book drives throughout the year for Read Aloud Delaware.
- Providing a monthly literacy program for children and parents at the Knollwood Community Center.
- Conducting meetings once a month for Grandparents United Delaware where we take care of the children while
their primary caregivers (grandparents, aunts, uncles) meet in a support
group.
- Providing volunteer mentors who meet with one child from the Bayard School
for an hour each week during school hours. This is in support of Delaware Creative Mentoring.
- Designing, furnishing, and providing reading materials for the lounge/library at Delaware Adolescents Program Inc. (DAPI).
- Continuing the League's Teacher's Supply Closet where
teachers can purchase gently used books and donated classroom
supplies at deeply discounted prices.

Past Programs
After early concentration on war work, the Junior League
channeled its efforts into originating and supporting community service
organizations focusing on the physical and psychological well-being of women and
children. Traditionally, the League has begun or boosted fledgling
organizations and withdrew when these organizations were able to function
without its support. Throughout its history, the League has renewed its
affiliations with many organizations and participated in numerous coalitions.
The following is a list of the most significant League projects, by decade.
