FUNDRAISING

The Junior League of Wilmington sponsors a number of community-focused fundraisers throughout the year including the Whale of a Sale and Heart of the Home® Kitchen Tours.  Proceeds from the fundraisers support the Junior League of Wilmington's programs and mission to promote voluntarism, develop the potential of women and improve communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

Whale-of-a-Sale

Since 1980, the Whale of a Sale has been featured as "Wilmington’s Largest Community Sale" (click for video). The Whale of a Sale is traditionally held the first Saturday in November at a chosen urban site.

The Junior League of Wilmington collects donations from members and local merchants to sell to the community at affordable prices.  In addition to gently used items, the Whale of a Sale contains sections offering new merchandise, furniture and antiques.  This popular event draws many crowds who often wait in line overnight to be the first to shop the Whale of a Sale.

Cookbook

Photo of Cookbook coverIn 1993, the JLW celebrated 75 years of community service with the release of a cookbook, Savor The Brandywine Valley. It featured an exciting collection of local recipes contributed by members and local restaurants.

The League's current cookbook, Dancing On The Table is a collection of unique, delicious recipes perfect for today's style of entertaining.

Heart of the Home® Kitchen Tour

In 2004, the Junior League of Wilmington introduced its newest fundraiser -- the Heart of the Home® Kitchen Tour. This  kitchen design tour showcases 15-20 of the area's finest kitchens.  The self-paced tour is held on one Saturday in the Spring and offers the opportunity to see the work of local kitchen designers, architects and developers in new, renovated and/or remodeled kitchens.  Last year, the event raised over $70,000 and hosted approximately 900 attendees at the tour.  The Heart of the Home® Kitchen Tour has been featured in Delaware Today, the News Journal and Signature magazine.
