SIGNATURE PROJECT FOR 2007-2008
East Side Charter School
Last
spring the League chose East Side Charter School (ESCS) library and accelerated
reading program as the signature project for 2007-2008. ESCS, whose motto is Every Child Will Learn, serves over 240 students and has consistently
received a Superior rating from the Department of Education. The school's
academic success is even more impressive considering that over 85 percent of the
students are from households below the poverty level.
The school has a library, but it is need of major capital improvements,
decorating, and an enhanced book collection. The school could also benefit from
an accelerated or independent reading program to boost reading skills and
comprehension.
The goals of the ESCS Signature Project are:
- Donate money for a reading program that will encourage student, teacher,
and parental involvement.
- Dedicate volunteer hours to improve the library.
- Provide ongoing CAC-type support like a Family Reading Night.
The League plans to purchase five sets of the 100 Book Challenge. This is an
independent reading system that will provide a minimum of 300 age-appropriate
books for five different classrooms. The students will be given independent
reading time during school, as well as be expected to take books home with them
to read. Parental involvement will be encouraged through various methods,
including sending skills cards home with the books that parents can use, and by
asking parents to sign reading time logs. These books will remain at the school
and will be updated as needed.
